In celebration of NAIDOC Week and the Gai-mariagal Festival, please join us for a special screening of the 2006 film 'Ten Canoes'.
'Ten Canoes' is a collaborative work with the Aboriginal community of Ramingining in the Northern Territory. Made in 2006, it was written and co-directed by Rolf de Heer with Peter Djigirr, and is narrated by the legendary actor David Gulpilil.
It is the distant past, tribal times. Dayindi (played by Jamie Gulpilil, son of the great David Gulpilil) covets one of the wives of his older brother. To teach him the proper way, he is told a story from the mythical past, a story of wrong love, kidnapping, sorcery, bungling mayhem and revenge gone wrong. In English storytelling (by David Gulpilil) and subtitled Ganalbingu language, this is a film unlike any other.
Sweets with native ingredients will be provided by the wonderful Aboriginal-owned Bush to Bowl!
Running time is approximately 90 minutes. This film is rated M, and contains moderate violence and some nudity.
For extra comfort, you’re welcome to bring your own cushion!
